How to Have a Travel-Themed Wedding on Long Island

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

Life, love, marriage: It’s all one big journey. If you and your fiancé love going to new destinations, then a travel-themed wedding is for you. Whether your favorite travel destinations are the sandy beaches of Florida or the elegant gardens of Tuscany, the right wedding venue can fulfill your globetrotter side… without the expensive plane ticket.

But remember, location is everything when planning a wedding like this—especially if you’re staying close to home. The Crest Hollow Country Club has eight breathtaking venues to choose from so you can escape to a jet-setting European destination or feel like you’re at chic South Beach—even if your wedding is in the winter! Here are three simple ways to have a travel-themed wedding ceremony and reception right here in the heart of Long Island.

Set the mood.

Establish your theme right from the start with save-the-date cards and wedding invitations in postcard, passport or airplane ticket designs. For your ceremony and reception, think small to create a big impact: suitcases as flower holders or cake stands, escort cards that look like luggage tags, compasses as centerpieces and travel-themed props such as safari hats, ski goggles and hula skirts for a fun and unique photo booth.

Eat like the locals.

Whether you’re sticking to one or multiple destinations for your special day, choose a venue with an eclectic menu so your food and beverages reflect your theme. For an Italian ambiance, consider foods such as antipasto, baked clams and hand-tossed pizza. For dessert, zeppole or cannoli are perfect choices. If you’re into the chill vibe of a beach wedding, create a Caribbean flair with foods such as jerk-style chicken; scotch bonnet vegetables and fried sweet plantains for dessert.

X marks the spot.

Maps are an obvious décor choice when it comes to a travel-themed wedding, but how much or how little you want to use them is up to you. For a subtle touch, incorporate them into the bow ties and cuff links of the groom and his groomsmen; for you and your bridesmaids, use them to line the bottoms of your shoes. For more noticeable touches, use maps to create paper floral arrangements, make confetti in fun shapes like airplanes and suitcases with a paper punch for when you and your groom depart and use a globe as a unique take on a guest book.
